Obama's 'Historical' Election Subject of Southern Baptist Proposal

img20068307446hi.jpgThe president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) says he doesn't believe a proposed resolution recognizing the historical significance of President Barack Obama's election will face much opposition during next week's annual meeting of the denomination.

The proposed resolution has been submitted by Rev. Dwight McKissic, Sr., pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas. In the resolution, McKissic notes that there are many policy differences between President Obama and the SBC, but refers to the election of America's first African-American president as a "tremendous moment in our nation's history."

While the resolution recognizes the "historic nature" of the election and its contribution toward racial reconciliation in America, it also urges the president to use his office to "promote liberty and justice for all people, including the unborn."

In a Christian Post article, the pastor of a Salt Lake City church expressed concern over the resolution, saying that while he hopes there is not too much opposition to it, the "cynical part" of him "wonders what the good ole boys might have to say about this."

But SBC president Johnny Hunt says the denomination can support the resolution without supporting President Obama's politics. "I think it is certainly a great thing to do, to celebrate the election of an African American," says Hunt. "That was a great day in our country; we celebrate it as a country -- and I think, [as] Southern Baptists, we can do that."

On his blog, McKissic said the proposed resolution is in line with a 1995 resolution that pledged to eradicate racism in all forms from Southern Baptist life. He says the current proposal has nothing to do with politics.

Southern Baptist delegates -- referred to as "messengers" -- are set to gather in Louisville, Kentucky, June 23-24.
